Montlake Community Club

• May 2026 •

Hi Montlake!

May is blooming with opportunity!

Thanks to all of the neighbors who came out for the Community Conversation and Urban Survival Skills Fair. Over 70 Montlakers learned about plans for the Hopin site and had an opportunity to share feedback with Rep Macri, Sen Pedersen, and Joy Hunt from the Office of Housing. We will be in touch with more opportunities to engage on this topic as the project matures. Thank you to all the neighbors who made this event a productive success.

The Montlake Community Club will be holding elections for board leadership for the 2026–2027 year. Watch for a separate email in the coming weeks with candidate info and voting instructions. Interested in joining the board yourself? Email info@montlake.net by May 8th with a brief bio. We'd love to have you!

Tip of the month

We are sharing tips from the Emergency Management Division of Washington, www.DisasterReadyWashington.com, to help you prepare for natural disasters. Spend one hour each month to make progress on this essential goal.

This month we will focus on building a Grab-and-Go kit.

In an emergency, you may have to leave your home. Your Grab-and-Go kit should include enough supplies to last you two to three days and be easy to grab and carry. Its contents should include:

• Water: One quart per person per day; more if you intend to cook or prepare foods with water.

• Medicine: Prescription drugs, first aid kit

• Food: For two or three days

o Choose foods that don't need cooking, refrigeration, or water

o Protein from dry meats, like beef sticks or jerky, or tofu

o High energy foods: peanut butter, granola bars, trail mix

o Some comfort foods, such as cookies or hard candy

o Consider any special dietary needs

• Pet Needs: food, water, veterinary medications, leashes, etc.

• Clothing: hats, gloves, set of extra clothes

Make sure to review your kit annually.

Input for City Council

Do you have ideas for things that could be improved for our neighborhood? Is there something you think the city needs to address? This can be anything from a bad sidewalk to ideas for beautification.

Rachel represents our neighborhood and is looking for input. Fill out this form with any ideas you have and she will bring them up quarterly.

Montlake Neighborhood Yard Sale

Save the date! The annual Montlake yard sale returns on September 20th. It's the perfect chance to declutter, find treasures, and connect with neighbors. Start gathering your gently used items now – more details on how to participate (or just shop) coming soon.

Montlake Turkey Trot

When: Thanksgiving morning, 2026
Where: Washington Park Arboretum

The 11th Annual Montlake Turkey Trot is scheduled for Thanksgiving morning. Over the years, this event has raised more than $500,000 for the University District Food Bank.

This year's 5K walk/run route has been changed to accommodate more participants but will still take place in the Arboretum. Check the Montlake Community Club website (montlake.net) for more information and to register.

Start training now and invite your friends and family—it's a great way to start your Thanksgiving!

Montlake Business District Sidewalks

We hope you've been enjoying the repaired and replaced sidewalks on 24th Ave E between E Lynn and E McGraw. The city removed the trees because their roots damaged the sidewalks, but new trees will be planted in the fall during planting season. Mulch will fill the areas around the tree trunks, and we hope to install large planter boxes for flowers and plants between them.

Useful Neighborhood resources

  • Did you know?    Ivy. Must. Go.

Ivy (English/Common/Atlantic Ivy) is an invasive plant that:

    Strangles, kills trees - dangerous!

Smothers native plants - hurts plants!

Provides cover for rats - attracts rats to yards!

Spreads far by birds - even if trimmed!

Many Montlake neighbors are removing ivy this season.

Remove ivy from yards, trees, fences.

Trees: Trim 2’ ring around bottom of trunk - That’s ALL: the rest will die on its own!

Elsewhere: pull out from root, mulch or cardboard, repeat.

    Share before/after photos - celebrate together :)

Fun fact: It’s illegal to sell ivy in Washington State.

  • You can find these links on our website but here they are for easy reference

  • Find It, Fix It  (Easy way to report problems in the city)

    1. CDC.GOV/vaccines (Easy way to make sure you and your household are up-to-date on immunizations)

    2. USPSTF (Easy way to make sure you are up-to-date on evidence-based health screening)
